Mid-Autumn Festival, the celebration of good harvest, is a time for family and friends to gather and say thanks for prosperity, harmony and unity.
The romance of the holiday comes from popular folklore where a hero named Hou Yi was gifted the elixir of immortality when he saved the Chinese from major drought and devastation. When his apprentice tried to steal the elixir, Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e drank it and ascended to the moon. Devastated, Hou Yi displayed fruits and cakes as sacrifices to his wife. But once a year, when the Harvest Moon is the biggest and brightest of the year, she descends back to earth to reunite with Hou Yi. Mid-Autumn Festival truly marks a time of Thanksgiving and unity of love and family.
